In 2005, João Figueiras and Maria Messias created Blackmaria Produção Audiovisual. The company has mainly been focused on the production of feature films, documentaries, television series, corporate films and diverse audio-visual content. Blackmaria also works in the fields of design, communication, marketing and artistic production, as well as offering film service solutions through the Filming in Portugal project.
In the last 15 years, we had work with a talented and diverse group of filmmakers, and more than 30 feature and short films were produced, with focus on auteur and independent cinema. Our films were selected and awarded in the more important international film festivals (Cannes International Film Festival, Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Rio Film Festival, IndieLisboa, Toronto Film Festival, Taipei Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Torino Film Festival, Cine Mar del Plata Argentina, International Film Festival of Rotterdam, among others), and been commercially screened in several countries like Brazil, France, United States, Japan, Russia. In the last years we have expand our activities through international co-productions in particular with Brazil and France.
